The year of manufacture alone rarely decides whether to replace a steam boiler. What counts is its technical condition, the water quality over the past years, its maintenance history and how it has been operated. Efficiency, operating hours, energy source and spare parts supply also play a part.
In a brewery, a steam boiler often runs for 15 years or more. At some point the question comes up: keep it running, modernize it or replace it? The boiler’s age is a reason to take a closer look. The answer lies in its condition. The following criteria will help you assess it.
Is age a reason to replace a steam boiler?
Age alone is rarely enough reason. Two boilers built in the same year can be in very different condition. JUMAG knows a brewery that was still running its DG 260 after 25 years because it paid close attention to water quality. In breweries, JUMAG often finds boilers that are still in good technical shape after many years of operation, because water quality is usually a priority there.
JUMAG guarantees the availability of many spare parts for ten years. At the same time, JUMAG services and maintains steam boilers that have been in operation much longer.
Water quality determines the life of the pressure vessel
Water quality is one of the most important factors for a steam boiler’s service life. Salts in the feedwater form deposits and put stress on the pressure vessel. A reverse osmosis system produces almost salt-free water and significantly reduces this stress.
The difference shows after years. A boiler that ran on insufficiently treated municipal water for a long time may already need a new pressure vessel. A comparable boiler running on reverse osmosis water is often still in excellent condition at the same age. Based on JUMAG’s experience, that makes a difference of around €20,000 for the operator, either saved entirely or postponed by many years.
So ask yourself: How has the feedwater been treated so far? What is its conductivity? What did the last inspections of the pressure vessel show?
Burner, electrical components and operation
The burner and the electrical components wear too. The burner’s service life depends on correct adjustment and on how the boiler is operated. Electrical components age mainly through frequent switching. A well-adjusted boiler that runs evenly therefore lasts longer.
Flue gas temperature shows efficiency
The flue gas temperature shows how much fuel a boiler wastes. In the example from our article “What Does a Steam Boiler Really Cost Over Ten Years?”, the flue gas leaves a comparison boiler at 280 °C. A JUMAG DG 560 with two economizers reaches around 90 °C and uses 11 percent less fuel. You can often find your boiler’s reading in its maintenance or measurement report.
Operating hours determine the savings
The more hours a boiler runs, the more an efficient boiler saves. In the example, the more efficient steam boiler saves around €9,300 in fuel costs at 2,500 hours per year. At 4,000 hours in two-shift operation, this rises to around €14,900. For a boiler used only seasonally, energy costs are less often a strong enough reason to replace it.
Energy source and CO₂ price
If you are replacing your boiler anyway, it is worth reviewing the energy source too. If you generate steam with gas or heating oil, you pay the CO₂ price as part of your fuel bill. As of October 2026, it is €55 to €65 per tonne in Germany for 2026, and the Bundestag has decided to keep the same corridor for 2027. The EU emissions trading system for fuels is scheduled to start in 2028.
Electric steam boilers in the JUMAG EDI series produce no flue gas and are CO₂-free when powered by green electricity. Hybrid systems combine oil or gas with electricity in one unit. In Germany, funding programs are available for electric steam boilers, and JUMAG can advise you on the current terms.
Spare parts supply
JUMAG keeps many components in stock for ten years or longer. Things get critical when central parts such as controls or burners are discontinued. That increases the risk of a long shutdown in the middle of production.
Checklist for keeping or replacing a boiler
| Criterion | Points to continued operation or modernization | Points to replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure vessel | Inspection results without findings | Deposits, corrosion, pressure vessel replacement due |
| Water treatment | Consistent for years, for example with reverse osmosis | Long operation with insufficiently treated water |
| Flue gas temperature | Low, heat recovery in place | High, no economizer |
| Operating hours | Few hours, seasonal operation | Multi-shift or continuous operation |
| Spare parts | Key parts available | Central parts discontinued |
| Energy source | Fits your plans | Switch to electricity or hybrid planned |
| Steam demand | Boiler matches current demand | Demand has changed significantly |
If several points in the right-hand column apply, a detailed calculation is worthwhile. If most are on the left, targeted modernization often achieves more, for example better water treatment or a re-tuned burner.
