Are oil and gas cheaper than electricity for steam generation? That may still be true today. But anyone considering purchasing a steam generator today should reconsider. Because the path to electrically powered steam generators—or hybrid operation—is already clear in Germany and Europe in the medium term.

- Rising CO2 pricing is a given for the coming years. It will make oil and gas increasingly expensive.
- CO2 pricing began this year. Currently, it is “only” €25 per ton of CO2, but in just five years, it is expected to be between €55 and €65 per ton of CO2. The model of the German Institute for Economic Research assumes a significantly more ambitious price of €180 per ton of CO2.
- The Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the Green Deal are forcing companies to use renewable energies.
- The EEG regulates the preferential feed-in of electricity from renewable sources into the power grid. The share of renewable energies is to increase to 40–45% by 2025 and to 55–60% by 2035. The European Green Deal envisions climate neutrality by 2050. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 by 2030. However, because less than 30% has been achieved so far, emissions must be reduced more sharply in the next ten years than in the entire previous 30 years. This requirement is being passed on to companies.
- The consequence: energy-intensive processes – including steam generation – are being scrutinized.
- The share of renewable energy in companies’ energy mix must therefore increase significantly. Savings in oil- and gas-fired boilers through increased energy efficiency are an important factor, but will not be sufficient in the medium term. Conclusion: In the coming years, European companies’ demand for green electricity will rise rapidly, with more and more processes being converted from fossil fuels to electricity.
